LUMAS VOICES:
FAVORITES OF AN INTERIOR DESIGNER
His designs are in demand worldwide, his style unmistakable: Through a personal selection, Maurizio Pellizzoni shows how art transforms interiors – into spaces that stand out.
Mr. Pellizzoni, what role does art play in your design process?
Art is the heart of a room. It replaces function with experience, adding depth and character. In my projects, it is never an afterthought but essential to the creative process from the very beginning. Art creates atmosphere, evokes emotion, and opens a dialogue between architecture and those who inhabit it.
Colony by Tommy Clarke, for example, has an extraordinary, almost meditative quality – a quiet radiance. Its soft color palette and clear aerial perspective bring balance and calm, perfectly suited to modern spaces with clean lines that invite reflection and relaxation.
Your selection also includes works with a very different impact, such as Lucia Giacani’s "Killing Time III". What fascinates you about this contrast?
That work is an explosion of energy. Its vibrant colors instantly bring movement into a room. I like to place such pieces in transitional or creative areas – hallways, studios, even bathrooms – where, as eye-catchers, they bring functional spaces to life.
You say art is never mere decoration, but a meaningful element. What makes the difference for you?
When a work reflects personality, it creates spaces that are authentic, soulful – and tell a story.
One striking example is Lush Life II by Jesper Krijgsman, which feels like a visual fairy tale. With its richness of detail and intensity of color, it draws the viewer irresistibly into another world – especially effective in communal or creative settings.
In the end, that is what art achieves: it creates meaning.
