5 QUESTIONS WITH:
ANDREI NICOLESCU
Architecture, graphic design, illustration – Andrei Nicolescu weaves them all into a distinctive visual language with international recognition. In this interview, he speaks about inspiration, the art of distillation, and the stories that unfold beyond the frame.
Where do you find your art?
Everywhere ideas pulse: in jazz chords, cinema stills, novel characters—and in imagination. I gather fragments until they converge as color, form, or texture.
From the first idea to the final work—what does your process look like?
My architectural studies give me structure: research, distill, sketch. Only when the concept breathes do I let the lines dance. That way, even spontaneous gestures stay logically anchored.
Your scenes feel like film stills. What happens beyond the frame?
I paint pauses, not endings. Every edge of the canvas is an invitation for the viewer to continue the story. If someone feels the wind blowing beyond the border, the work is alive.
Graphic design, illustration, architecture—what connects them all?
Reduction. Whether blueprint or portrait, I seek the essence, not ornament. Geometry meets empathy — a hard edge needs a soft heart, or it remains cold.
The album of your life—what would its cover look like?
A monochrome square, pierced by a single neon line. Where quiet turns into idea, and idea into sound, it becomes visible: architecture speaks loudest when it speaks in color.
