About Stephen HaleyBACKGROUND INFORMATION
BACK TO THE FUTURE
Australian artist Stephen Haley builds a bridge from the discoveries of the Renaissance to the 21st century. The construction of the vanishing point, and with it central perspective, was the starting point for the development of the modern, technology-driven world of images. The vedute of the early Renaissance offered a sober view of the buildings of spatially well-ordered cities. Haley creates a congenial image of the highly ordered structures of today's living and working environments. Using 3D technology, he produces striking illusions, which he then breaks through repetition and the mirroring of real city panoramas. It is a visual art of the fugue, in which the modern world emerges from well-organised basic themes. Haley's works, which he calls "virtual photographs", are scientifically grounded visual commentaries on present and future developments.
Stephen Haley holds a doctorate from the University of Melbourne, where he taught art history. In his academic work, he has explored the themes of society and reflection in depth. His thinking and creative work today start from a network that encompasses the internet, other networks and the dependencies of modern humans: "The net encloses us all; it has the power to constrain us but also to connect us. It can oppress, but it can also radiate dizzying beauty – depending on how and by whom it is used."
According to Haley, real space is increasingly being shaped by models from virtual space. "The mirror has become a sign of our times. We stand at a historic moment in which the real is disappearing into simulation." The scholar's theses find their congenial counterpart in his almost disturbingly beautiful images of a particular future.

BETWEEN REALITY AND VIRTUALITY
Stephen Haley's artistic engagement with urban space goes far beyond the depiction of architecture. His works are at once images of the world we live in and reflections on how that world comes into being. What at first glance appears to be a cityscape reveals, on closer inspection, a complex perspective on the relationship between people, space and technology.
This engagement runs through his decades-long career. As early as "New Estate & Nature Strips" (2002), he placed the designed environment of modern humans at the centre of his work. In later exhibitions such as "Cities, Factories, Walls and Malls" (2018), "Formwork and Forgeries" (2020) and "Unsettled" (2022), he developed his investigation of urban structures further. Architecture appears not only as an expression of human creative power, but also as a reflection of the social systems that shape our everyday lives.
The combination of artistic practice and scholarly reflection defines Haley's distinctive approach. As an art historian with a doctorate and a long-standing university lecturer, he unites analytical precision with visual imagination. His works move between painting, photography and digital imaging, opening up a space in which the boundaries between reality and simulation increasingly blur.
His artistic position has been recognised with numerous awards, including the ANZ Visual Art Fellowship (2004) and the Rupert Bunny Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship (2016). His works are held in major collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Bendigo Art Gallery.
Haley's art does not simply take us into a possible future. It reveals how much of that future is already embedded in the images of our present.

Stephen Haley was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1961. He studied history, philosophy and painting at renowned institutions in his home city and in 2005 received his doctorate from the University of Melbourne with a thesis on the significance of the mirror in contemporary culture. The combination of art and scholarship has shaped his work ever since, as well as his academic career: for many years he taught at Australian universities, including as Head of Painting at the University of Melbourne, which appointed him Honorary Senior Fellow in 2023.
His works, exhibited internationally, are held in major collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Bendigo Art Gallery. Numerous awards recognise his artistic achievements, among them the ANZ Visual Art Fellowship (2004), the R & M McGivern Acquisitive Prize for Painting (2006) and the Rupert Bunny Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship (2016).
