In 1995, the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung launched a legendary campaign. Its slogan – there is always a clever mind behind it – emerged in the 1960s and had already earned a place in advertising history. Conceived by Scholz & Friends, the series has flourished for over two decades by featuring prominent figures from politics, the media, economics, art, and sport – all hidden behind a newspaper.
The series has been justifiably recognized by German magazine Der Spiegel as “the campaign of the century”. Now, for the first time, we are proud to present a selection of these images as LUMAS limited editions signed by the artists, which includes figures such as Kai-Uwe Gundlach. Big names meet carefully designed settings that offer clues to the personality behind the paper. Star architect Daniel Libeskind poses on a steel girder above New York in an homage to one of the most memorable images in this history of photography.
The picture of German statesman Hans-Dietrich Genscher also captures a moment in time. It was taken on the 25th anniversary of the day he first announced exit permits for East German refugees, and in the same location: the balcony of the German Embassy in Prague. For lovers of classical music, there is the Berlin Philharmonic and concert pianist Lang Lang. An unusual combination is Vitali Klitschko with the Sphinx of Gizeh. What do the two have in common? A striking figure, and a powerful mind too – the former boxing world champion also boasts a doctorate degree in sports science.
